Tanjung Puting National Park is one of the most popular destination among foreign visitors in Indonesia. This National Park is famous for its of OrangUtan Conservation. Pangkalan Bun Airport (PKN), the gate of Tanjung Puting National Park
To go to Tanjung Puting National Park from Bali, you need to fly to Pangkalan Bun City first. It is the main entry point of Tanjung Puting National Park. The name of the Airport is Iskandar Airport with IATA Code is (PKN). As I know, only from 3 big cities that have direct connection to Pangkalan Bun Airport (PKN), those are Jakarta Airport, Semarang Airport and Surabaya Airport. Most of them are in Java Island. The other direct flight from Pangkalan Bun will be only to other city nearby in Borneo Island. If you are from Bali Island then you should fly to one of city I mentioned above, it can be Semarang, Surabaya or Jakarta. But the closest one from Bali would be Surabaya Airport.
Several flights that going to or from Pangkalan Bun are smaller flight (plane with propeller). They fly lower from land compared with the normal commercial flight. Iskandar Airport itself is actually not a commercial airport, it is a military airport.
Flights from Bali Airport (DPS) to Pangkalan Bun (PKN), Tanjung Puting National Park
There is no direct flight from Bali to Pangkalan Bun. From Bali, you need to fly to Surabaya Airport as it is the closest airport from Bali instead of Jakarta or Semarang.
There is not much flight option from Surabaya Airport to Pangkalan Bun. Only 1 – 3 flights daily.
Be careful!!! The flights are very often to be delayed or to be cancelled, in some case, the flights can be moved forward. Sometimes, if they do not have enough passenger, you will be moved to another flight even from different company. Always pay attention to your email or phone in case you are facing this situation, they will give you notification to your email or mobile number for any change.
My personal suggestion, always choose the earliest flight, in case they cancel the flight, you can still catch the next flight. The flight from Surabaya to Pangkalan Bun will cost around IDR 1.000.000 to IDR 2.000.000.
If your apps could not find the flights between Surabaya City and Pangkalan Bun, try to download Traveloka or tiket.com Apps, it is an Indonesian Local Travel Apps.
Instead of flying from Bali to Surabaya, you should explore Bromo and Ijen Volcano first, it is one of must things to do while you are in Indonesia. Check this tour package : Mount Bromo and Ijen Crater Tour from Bali drop Surabaya
How to go from Pangkalan Bun to Tanjung Puting National Park
After you reach Pangkalan Bun, you need to go to Kumai Port, it is a port that connected to other island in Indonesia by National Shipping Company. Actually you could go also from Semarang Port to Kumai Port by ship. However, i do not recommend this option, it is complicated for foreigners especially if you do not have enough time to explore Indonesia.
Normally travellers need to book a tour to explore Tanjung Puting National Park. The local tour agency will provide shuttle service from Pangkalan Bun to Kumai Port. It will be good idea if you can stay a night at the hotel in Pangkalan Bun before you have the tour. Because the tour will be really tiring with really basic service.
From Kumai Port, you will go with traditional wooden boat called Klotok. The journey itself will take around 2 hours passing the Sekonyer River to reach the basecamp, it is the place where the Klotok stop. The Klotok crew will cook meals for you in this basecamp, you will also spend the night in the basecamp. To go further to the Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre, you still need to have boat trip for around 2,5 hours.
Each Klotok has different facility. This facilities on Klotok is the one determine the tour price, also the length of your stay. Klotok will be your transportation system and your place to stay to explore Tanjung Puting National Park. Be ready with this adventure! You will stay along the night in the middle of Borneo Jungle. You will also see the wild animals in the real life.
