Flight from Bali to Bromo

The fastest and the most convenience way to visit Mount Bromo from Bali is by flight. However, you need to stop in Surabaya City, the closest airport city from Bromo Volcano before continuing by land transport. It will take around 1 hour to go from I Gusti Ngurah Rai Airport (Bali) to Juanda International Airport (Surabaya).

If you do prefer to go by public transportation, you should take the bus from Bungurasih Bus Terminal. It is located around 20 KM from Juanda Airport. You can grab a taxi to go to the bus terminal. From the bus terminal you should take a bus that going to Probolinggo City then stop in Banyuangga Bus Terminal. From Banyuangga Bus Terminal then you can catch a local transport. It is looks like very basic transport with old condition. Ask them if they will go to Cemoro Lawang Village, the last village to enter Bromo National Park. 

To explore Mount Bromo, you need to hire a jeep. Normally the accommodation offer a jeep rental. The rate is around IDR 600.000 to 1.000.000 per jeep. You can share the jeep with other visitor to make it cheaper. You will also need to pay around IDR 300.000 per person to enter Bromo National Park. All jeep will past the National Park Gate, so you could just hand over the money to the jeep driver, then they will arrange the ticket payment.

As a reminder, do not be surprise, most of the buses from Surabaya to Bromo are in basic condition, they are looks old. Also the bus terminal. Do not expect that the bus terminal is in good condition, you will feel chaotic in the Bus Terminal in both Surabaya and Probolinggo.

So I will recommend to take a bus from Surabaya to Probolinggo only if you are a backpacker that really likes to explore a new place with low budget.

Bus from Bali to Mount Bromo

Personally, i do not recommend you to take a bus, however, i still need to give you an information about How to take a bus from Bali to Mount Bromo.

You should take the bus from Mengwi Bus Terminal, it is the main bus terminal in Bali. To be easier for you, wherever you are in Bali, you can take an online taxi like Gojek or Grab to take you to Mengwi Bus Terminal. You could easily buy the bus ticket on the spot. If you want to buy the ticket in advance, you can book it via Traveloka Apps. 

There are several bus operators to take you to Probolinggo City (Bayuangga Terminal), here is the option : M Trans, Handoyo, and Ladju Trans. The trip will take around 9 hours journey including ferry crossing from Bali to Java Island. As a reminder, most of the buses have a final destination in Surabaya or Jakarta. You have to be aware and let the bus staff know that you will make a stop in Probolinggo City.

Train from Bali to Mount Bromo

Jakarta to Bali by train

For those looking for a longer adventure and with extra time, a combined train and ferry trip from Bali to Bromo could be an attractive option. There is no train in Bali Island, you have to go to Banyuwangi City in Java Island to start the train journey. To reach Ketapang Banyuwangi station, passengers must cross by ferry. From your hotel to the ferry port you could use a bus from Ubung Bus Terminal or Mengwi Bus Terminal . Ubung Bus Terminal is more for local bus in intern Bali Island and Mengwi Bus Terminal is more for inter-island Bus to Java , Lombok or Sumbawa Island. If you are going from Mengwi Bus Terminal, then you can take the inter-island Bus that having direction to Surabaya or Malang City in Java Island then you could just stop at ferry terminal. This long trip bus is more convenient than local bus in Bali Island. The other option of land transport in Bali is a shared taxi, for this maybe you could ask your hotel or local tour agency there in Bali to organize the shared taxi. It will take around 5 hours from Denpasar or Ubud to reach the ferry port.

After you arrive at ferry port in Bali side (Gilimanuk Port) you can get out from the bus then purchase the ferry ticket for around USD 3. We just need to cross the strait for around 30 to 60 minutes. However, sometimes the ferry could wait in line to dock, it could take hours in the busy day. Or you could wait longer in case of bad weather. So please be aware with the train departure from Banyuwangi City to Probolinggo City. And please be aware about timing, Bali Time is one hour forward compared with Java Island Time.

After you arrive at the ferry port in Java Side (Ketapang Port, Banyuwangi City) you can just walk  to the train Station. There are 2 train stations in Banyuwangi City. The main railway stations is Banyuwangi Kota Station (BWI), it is located at Banyuwangi City Centre. And the second one is Ketapang Station (KTG). The one you can reach by walking is Ketapang Station with the railway station code (KTG).

If you would like to have a train journey in Indonesia, my suggestion is to prepare the ticket in advance. Prepare at least 1 week or even one month before, because train journey is popular in Java Island for foreigners and for local people. So do not ruin your travel itinerary in case of the train seat fully booked. You could book the train ticket from Traveloka Apps, tiket.com apps or KAI Access Apps. KAI Access is the official apps from Indonesian Railway Company, however, Traveloka is more popular for the locals instead of KAI Access.

The closest train station to Mount Bromo is Probolinggo Station (PB). From Probolinggo Train Station (PB), you can catch a shared car to take you to Cemoro Lawang Village. Normally once you go out you will meet the other travellers, ask them to have a shared transport, it will make the price cheaper. Otherwise, there are a lot of drivers that will offer a transport service in the Probolinggo Train Station.
