Hello guys, thanks for visiting my blog. I am Tinton Arya, the founder of this website, BorobudurSunrise.com, the trusted tour agency in Yogyakarta City. In this article I would like to give you an information regarding the transportation option to go from Yogyakarta International Airport (YIA) to the city centre. For your information, Yogyakarta International Airport also known as YIA Airport is a new airport in Yogyakarta City to replace the old one, Adi Sutjipto International Airport. YIA Airport just became fully operational on March 29th, 2020.
Location of Yogyakarta International Airport (YIA).
Unlike the old airport of Yogyakarta City, Adi Sutjipto that located just around 10 KM and take only 30 minutes to reach the city centre, Yogyakarta International Airport is located around 45 KM from city centre and takes around 1,5 hours by car. It is located in Temon District, Kulon Progo Regency, Special Region of Yogyakarta.
The airport was designed not only to serve domestic flight within Indonesia but also to serve international flights like from Singapore, Malaysia. And in the future, the government will try to generate more direct flights to other countries. The runway of the airport is able to be landed by big airplanes like Airbus A380 or Boeing 777 / 747. Hopefully, with this New Yogyakarta International Airport, Yogyakarta will have more visitor in the future.

Transportation option to go from Yogyakarta International Airport (YIA) to city centre.
The government has created some land transportation services to support the operation of YIA Airport. And also, there are some private transportation as other choice for people to choose to reach Yogyakarta City. For each transportation service, it has pros and cons. So, I will try to give you guys the explanation about these options.
1. Yogyakarta Airport Train to city centre
The Yogyakarta airport train can be your best option to take you from the airport to the city centre. There are 2 type of train, It will cost only IDR 20.000 and IDR 50.000. Both trains are just less than 5$. And in my opinion, there is no difference between both trains, only the price is difference and there is no significant for the time difference. The airport train is also the fastest one compared with any other transportation. It takes around 40 minutes. It will stop in one station called Wates Train Station in the middle of the way before it reach Yogyakarta Central Train Station (YK).
It is easy to find where is the Yogyakarta Airport train station. Once you have been already out from the airport, just follow the direction of the airport train station. It has so many direction signs for where to go. You can buy the ticket on the spot in the airport train station. Sometimes, ticket on the spot could be sold out, so it is better for you to make reservation via this website link : reservation.railink.co.id. This link is for reservation of short distance train in Indonesia. For long distance train in Indonesia, please download KAI Access. Anyway as my opinion, the airport train will be my number one choice if I want to go from the airport to the city centre. It is fast, it is cheap, clean and the train stop exactly in the city centre. The train will stop in Yogyakarta Central Station (YK) which is located near by Malioboro street. Malioboro street is the most famous street in Yogyakarta, it is kind of street where people can walk around, shopping in a local market or eating street food. And the station is just located around 2 KM from the Kraton of Yogyakarta, it is a palace where Sultan of Yogyakarta living.
However, when you choose the airport train, you have to consider the location of your hotel. Because, once you arrive in the Yogyakarta Central Station (YK), you have to transfer to another transportation to take you to the final destination. But it is easy to find a taxi in the station. You will see many taxi counter once you go out from the train. In my opinion, the airport train will be perfect for a single traveller with only a backpack to bring. For a family traveler with some luggage to bring, it is still good, but i would suggest another transportation option.
So, the cons is, when you travel with your family with many luggages, you have to transfer 2 times. In my opinion, the airport train will be perfect for a single travellers with only a backpack to bring, but for family traveler, it is still good, but i would suggest another transportation option.
2. Airport shuttle (DAMRI) from Yogyakarta Airport (YIA)
The second option for public transport will be a shuttle bus called DAMRI. It is also affordable like the airport train. The price is in around IDR 50.000 depends on the final stop. There are some final stops, like Grand Inna Hotel Malioboro. Sleman City Hall, and Adi Sutjipto International Airport. If you would like to stop in the exact city centre, you have to choose the Grand Inna Hotel Malioboro as the final stop. The hotel is located exactly in Malioboro Street and just 2 minutes walking from Yogyakarta Central Station. Until the time I write this blog, the schedule of the shuttle has changed for several times. However, from the last information I got, the schedule of the shuttle bus will follow the arrival schedule of the flights.
It is easy to find where is the DAMRI Shuttle location, once you get out from the airport, just walk straight around 50 meter from the exit gate. And you will see several DAMRI Shuttle park just in front of the exit gate.
You can buy the ticket on the spot and do not need to book in advance, the ticket counter just near by the shuttle. And you may ask to the staff in the ticket counter, which final stop is close to your accommodation.
If you choose the DAMRI Shuttle, it will take around 1,5 hours. It is slower than the airport train due to the traffic on the road. The only benefit when you choose the shuttle is you will have some final stop option.
The same as airport train, you have to change to another transportation once you reach the final stop. You have to consider that it will not be simple if you have some luggages or you come together as a group.
3. Book Yogyakarta Airport Pick Up Service in advance
As I mentioned before, for a single traveler with not so many luggage, it is good to go by airport train or airport shuttle. But, if you would like to have more convenient transportation, you can book the private airport transport in advance. The benefit is, you will have direct transportation to your hotel without changing to any vehicle. The normal price of the Private Pick Up Service will be in around vary from IDR 350.000 to IDR 500.000 per car up to 5 person from the airport to city centre. The journey will take around 1,5 hours depends on the traffic. So, if you are in a group with some luggages with you, the cost will be worth it.
The good news, I am the writer of BorobudurSunrise.com also could provide private pickup service. You can book it via this link : Yogyakarta Airport Pickup Service . Our service will cost USD 30 to take you from the airport directly to your hotel.

4. Airport Taxi and Online Taxi
The last transportation option will be an airport taxi. There are many taxi agencies in the airport. The taxi counters are located inside the airport just before the exit gate. The price range is start from IDR 300.000 up to 400.000, it depends on the destination. In some cases you can negotiate the price.
If you do not like to negotiate the airport taxi, you can book an online taxi in the airport as well. All you need to do just to download the GOJEK Apps and book the taxi on it, it is like a local version of UBER. In the apps, the price is more fair. However, the price in the apps is subject to change every time depends on the traffic and busy hour.
That’s all information I could give you regarding the transportation from Yogyakarta International Airport (YIA) to city centre, I wish you enjoy the Yogyakarta City.
