For your information, Yogyakarta International Airport also known as YIA Airport is a new airport in Yogyakarta City to replace the old one, Adi Sutjipto International Airport. YIA Airport just became fully operational on March 29th, 2020.

Location of Yogyakarta International Airport (YIA).

Unlike the old airport of Yogyakarta City, Adi Sutjipto that located just around 10 KM and take only 30 minutes to reach the city centre, Yogyakarta International Airport is located around 45 KM from city center and takes around 1,5 hours by car. It is located in Temon District, Kulon Progo Regency, Special Region of Yogyakarta.

The airport was designed not only to serve domestic flight within Indonesia but also to serve international flights like from Singapore, Malaysia. And in the future, the government will try to generate more direct flights to other countries. The runway of the airport  is able to be landed by big airplanes like Airbus A380 or Boeing 777 / 747. Hopefully, with this New Yogyakarta International Airport, Yogyakarta will have more visitor in the future.

Transportation option to go from Yogyakarta International Airport (YIA) to Borobudur.

There are 2 ways to go from Yogyakarta International Airport (YIA) to Borobudur Temple. The common option is by having journey from the airport to city centre. Normally, travellers choose to stay in the city centre before continue to Borobudur Temple in the next day. The reason is just because you will have more option when you stay in the city centre, other than in Borobudur area. It has more attractions or activities and closer to go to other places. However, if you choose to stay in Borobudur Area, you can continue to read this article till the end. It is correct that city centre of Yogyakarta has more activities and attraction, but Borobudur itself is also stunning. It is the greatest Budhist monument on earth. It is located in Magelang Regency. Borobudur is surrounded by villages, with the majority of people working as a farmer. By staying in Borobudur area, you will see the real traditional way of life of Javanese people. For sure, it is more refreshing to stay in Borobudur area compared if you stay in the Yogyakarta City Centre.

1. Airport Shuttle (DAMRI)

To reach Borobudur Temple from Yogyakarta International Airport (YIA), you can take an Airport Shuttle called Damri. It will cost you around IDR 50.000 per person (can be change). The journey will take around 2,5 hours. The shuttle will stop exactly near the main gate of Borobudur Temple. So, you have to check where is your accomodation. If,it is far enough from Borobudur Temple, then you have to order an online taxi called Gojek to take you to your accommodation. Gojek is like a local version of UBER. All you need to do is just to download the apps in your phone, and book the taxi on it.

You can easily find the Damri Shuttle only after the exit gate. Just excactly in front of the the exit gate you will find Damri Bus or shuttle will line up in the parking lot. There you can purchase the ticket directly on the spot.

2. Airport Taxi or Online Taxi

In case you cannot catch the shuttle, you still have chance to go to Borobudur by taxi. There are many taxi agents in the airport. The price will be around of IDR 400.000. Just before you reach the exit gate, there will be many taxi counters to offer you a transportation service. If you do not feel comfortable with their offer or you want to have more fair price, you may order an online taxi called GOJEK or Grab as well in the airport. The price is more fair, it depends on the traffic, and the price will get higher in the busy hour, especially during the flights arrival, because many people will book the taxi together in the same time.

3. Book Yogyakarta Airport Transportation Service to Borobudur in advance.

If you would like to have more convenient transportation, you can book the private airport transport in advance. The benefit is, you will hava direct transportation to your hotel without changing to any vehicle. The normal price of the Private Pick Up Service will be USD 45 per car up to 5 person from the airport to Borobudur Area. The journey will take around 2,5 hours. So if you visit Yogyakarta City in a group, booking transportation in advance will be worth it.
