The distance between Jakarta and Bromo is around 880 km with a travel time of around 11 to 12 hours by road. With a fairly long distance, there are many travel options to Bromo that you can use.

Flight from Jakarta to Mount Bromo

The fastest and the most convenience way to visit Mount Bromo from Jakarta is by flight. However, you need to stop in Surabaya City, the closest airport city from Bromo Volcano before continuing by land transport. It will take around 1,5 hours to go from Soekarno Hatta International Airport (Jakarta) to Juanda International Airport (Surabaya).

To be easier for you, you can book a tour that normally runs from Surabaya to take you to Bromo and Ijen Volcano. Here is the package option from MountBromoIjen.com that you can consider :

If you do prefer to go by public transportation, you should take the bus from Bungurasih Bus Terminal. It is located around 20 KM from Juanda Airport. You can grab a taxi to go to the bus terminal. From the bus terminal you should take a bus that going to Probolinggo City then stop in Banyuangga Bus Terminal. From Banyuangga Bus Terminal then you can catch a local transport. It is looks like very basic transport with old condition. Ask them if they will go to Cemoro Lawang Village, the last village to enter Bromo National Park. 

To explore Mount Bromo, you need to hire a jeep. Normally the accommodation offer a jeep rental. The rate is around IDR 600.000 to 1.000.000 per jeep. You can share the jeep with other visitor to make it cheaper. You will also need to pay around IDR 300.000 per person to enter Bromo National Park. All jeep will past the National Park Gate, so you could just hand over the money to the jeep driver, then they will arrange the ticket payment.

As a reminder, do not be surprise, most of the buses from Surabaya to Bromo are in basic condition, they are looks old. Also the bus terminal. Do not expect that the bus terminal is in good condition, you will feel chaotic in the Bus Terminal in both Surabaya and Probolinggo.

So I will recommend to take a bus from Surabaya to Probolinggo only if you are a backpacker that really like to explore a new place with low budget.

Train from Jakarta to Mount Bromo

 

The second way to go from Jakarta to Mount Bromo is by train. It is easy to take a train from Jakarta to Mount Bromo. The journey will take around 11 to 12 hours. You can find the train tickets via Traveloka Apps, tiket.com or KAI Access Apps. The destination should be Probolinggo Station (PB), it is the closest train station from Mount Bromo. There are 2 main departure stations in Jakarta, those are Gambir Station and Pasan Senen Station.

If you stay in Jakarta City Centre, I would recommend to start the trip from Gambir Station (GMR). Gambir Station is also have direct access from Soekarno Hatta International Airport by Damri Shuttle that will cost only around IDR 70.000. By the time I write this article, there is only 1 direct train to take you from Gambir Station, and also there is another train from Pasar Senen Station. So it will have only 2 option of trains that will take you from Jakarta directly to Probolinggo City. To have more option, you could split the train journey. First route is from Jakarta to Yogyakarta City then Yogyakarta City to Probolinggo Station.

It will be a best option if you travel to Indonesia, you should not skip Yogyakarta. Yogyakarta is one of the most visited tourist city in Indonesia. The place of the biggest Buddhist Temple in the world and the place of the biggest Hindus Temple Compound in Indonesia.

From Probolinggo Train Station, then you can catch a shared car to take you to Cemoro Lawang Village. Normally once you go out you will meet the other travellers, ask them to have a shared transport, it will make the price cheaper. There are a lot of drivers that will offer a transport service in the Probolinggo Train Station.

Bus from Jakarta to Mount Bromo

Personally, i do not recommend you to take a bus, however, i still need to give you an information about How to take a bus from Jakarta to Mount Bromo.

You should take the bus from Pulo Gebang Bus Terminal, it is the main terminal in Yogyakarta. To be easier for you, wherever you are in Jakarta, you can take an online taxi like Gojek or Grab to take you to Pulo Gebang Bus Terminal. I suggest to book the bus ticket in advance, you can book it via Traveloka Apps. 

There are several bus operators to take you to Probolinggo City (Bayuangga Terminal), here is the option : Sinar Jaya, Damri, Pahala Kencana and Lorena. The trip will take around 12 hours journey. My suggestion, you can depart after 17.00 PM from Jakarta, so you will arrive around 7AM in Probolinggo City, it will be safer for you instead to arrive earlier before sunrise.

As a reminder, most of the buses have a final destination in Bali. You have to be aware and let the bus staff know that you will make a stop in Probolinggo City.

Ask them if they will go to Cemoro Lawang Village, the last village to enter Bromo National Park. Also you can have shared transport.
